Light it up!

If you're feeling artsy head west this weekend to Winston-Salem. I'm really fascinated about a cutting-edge lighting event going on in the Twin City. It's all part of the Piedmont Craftsmen's Fair which has grown to become one of the nation's premier artisan festivals.

The University of North Carolina School of the Arts is set to unveil a daring one-of-a-kind light display that combines the brilliance of the Times Square lights with the dazzling holiday fireworks from Boston and Sydney, Australia. Now that's pretty heady stuff.

Some of the country's top lighting experts have teamed up with students from the school of the arts for this display at the Millennium Center in Winston-Salem.  You can see it for free at the corner of Fifth and Trade Streets downtown between 6:30PM and 11:00PM from November 13th through the 15th.

Light art is growing in popularity nationwide.  Just take a look at the  Shimmer Wall outside the Raleigh Convention Center. Durham is getting an illuminated sculpture for its new performing arts center courtesy of Capitol Broadcasting Company.

I don't know about you but my life would be lifeless without the arts. I worry that in this economic downturn that the arts will continue to suffer from a lack of funding. The arts unlock the imagination. They stir the soul.
