People are always asking me where to take vacation. What's a cool place? What's the most scenic drive? Carolina Conversations attempts to answer those questions and others.

Nickname Game

What's your nickname? The person with the funniest or most colorful wins a prize today.

I don't know about you but I have several nicknames. My sister Miriam calls me "Gus. " That makes sense because my middle name is Augustus. Valonda Calloway called me "Willie" on the air this morning. That's okay because Willie Mays was my all-time favorite sports hero as a child.

I also use the nickname "Willie" for my son William. Please don't tell anyone but my wife calls my son "Poochie." His grandfather calls him "Scooter." My daughter Lauren, now teaching first grade, has two nicknames - "Champ" and "Sweetpea."

WRAL meteorologist Mike Moss had a nickname growing up: "Moose." It's hard to believe that the lean and limber Mr. Moss played center on his high school football team but he did and he was a good one. Speaking of lean, what about Lynda Loveland. "Slim" was her nickname in high school. As my father would say about Lynda: "Now, that's one tall drink of water!"

Nicknames can be endearing. What is your's? A copy of my CD "Blue Ridge Reunion" goes to the best one posted today.

Diddy (hehe), I can't believe you released the "Poochie" secret! I always enjoy reading your blogs :)

Love, Champ

Bill, My name is Renee. My niece was learning to talk. I realized she could do "aah" sound easily, thus "Nay-Nay" was born some 40 years ago, then her brother Terry(in heaven now) and many cousins' kids. The babies could mimic the sound, and some said my name before MaMa or DaDa. Today it still sticks. Adults and family call me Nay-Nay, but I will always cherish my niece and nephew starting it! I Love it!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had an Aunt and Uncle that called me Stick-in-the-mud. I don;t know why but that is all they called me until their passing.

My friends at UNC used to call me Mole because they said I walked so fast like a mole scooting across campus!! That name still sticks around some today!! ha

Most of my family calls me Manda Panda. My nephew we call little man, and my neice is boo boo bear. My little sisters has to be the best by far though. Her name is Jacqulyn, but because of that and that fact she was born in Oct, we've always called her jack-o-lantern.

My nickname, since high school, is Nita-Bug. But my youngest son, Patrick (16), has been called Rat since he was a baby. It was Pat-Rat, but at age 5, he just wanted to be RAT. Everyone in our family and community calls him by his nickname. Most people think that it is his real name and trust me, they all know him as RAT, not Patrick.

I've had many nicknames that include, Sprite for my fiesty personality, Larue because my brother-in-law heard my mother calling me home from playing outside and when she said my name loudly and dragged out the end it sounded like Larue to him and it stuck. Both my parents have always called me Doodlebug or some variation of it (Doodle, Bug, Doo) and still do to this day. I was also called Panky by one of my childhood friends, a variation of Spanky from the little rascals. Great Topic!

I am called Flossie, I called my oldest daughter Fred when she was little. I called her that before she was born (I didn't know if I was having a girl or boy) and it stuck until she was in the 5th grade. Her dad is still called "goose" by his family and friends.

n12 - I had to put a character at the end of my nickname - also not very offensive (even though my friends meant it to be!).

fensk - I also have a few that I couldn't even think of putting out here!

So Willie, Gus, whoever you are - who wins????

Most of the "nicknames" I've had aren't repeatable in this blog. ;-)
